I’m constantly surprised that in this day and age, people will still pull the “racist” card at the drop of a hat. Yesterday at work, I was speaking (for the fourth time) with a disgruntled client (who had every reason to be disgruntled) who wanted to discuss her situation yet again. I believe she was hoping I could poop out a different answer, but that was beyond even my capabilities. Well, in medias conversation, she told me that we were racists and that was why she was having difficultiss. Hmmmmm….I have to admit I let a small snigger escape because I was taken aback at how ridiculous that notion actually was. I reassured her that white folks have the same problem, and that she and her husband were certainly not being singled due to their hispanic heritage. I will be gracious and say that she did apologize. I have to wonder if that is how us honkies are looked at-are we the big bad wolf? I certainly admit that the history of our country does not lend itself to the best opinions of us white folk, but I was still angered at the accusation. While in Peru I was called a “gringo” on a daily basis, leered at and propositioned by half the men I walked past, and told on many occasions that since I was an American, the worst would always be thought of me. Those four months were tough in that respect, but I don’t think that it ever got to the point that I openly accused passers-by of being racist. I certainly don’t mean to say that four whole months can compare to years of discrimination, but all the same, give me a break!! Why do humans always assume the worst of others that are not like them? Its too early for these musings…
